Microsoft struck back ... saying "the compound noun 'app store' means simply 'store at which apps are offered for sale,' which is merely a definition of the thing itself--a generic characterization."

Therefore, the compound name "Microsoft" must simply be a soft thing that is becoming micro in relevance (and business ethics)...
    :p

These are products that are now competing directly with the products or the PC industry. I have been using macs since I was about 4, but now that Apple is using Intel Processors, all they really have going for them are their ability to run OS X and their design, which are huge for most of Apple's current market. The ability to run Windows though has helped recently to increase Apple's sales, but it means that apples are now directly competing with Dell, HP and the like.

There are two kinds of people who would consider a mac:
    1. those who want to run OSX: they have no choice, just like before
    2. those who want to run Windows: they had no reason to buy a mac before, but they can consider it now

So with the move to Intel, Apple has in fact increased its potential market. If they play it well, I'm guessing they'll sell a lot more computers in the near future than they did in the past.

    Just my uneducated guess.

Sounds like you'd be interested in a nice Windows7 machine. Enjoy.

Seriously I am an apple fangirl, but this response embarrassed me. If in the future apple start offering 24 and 30 inch models, will you take back this statement.

    [Will MS be sued too?]
If it's UI infringes on the patentt, sure. If it doesn't, why sue?

Given that the patent is on metadata-based navigation, being able to slice the music files [on a portable player] by artists, albums, and playlists, do you really have an inkling of a suspicion that Microsoft's Zune player will not infringe?

I'll give MS the benefit here for the moment, but unless they've come up with a radically new way of interacting with your music that actually works, they'll either license/infringe on Creative's patent, or they'll produce a player no one knows how to use.

IMHO, it is pretty much a certainty that Zune will infringe on Creative's patent until Microsoft comes to licensing terms, just like just about every other player out there right now that manages more than a hundred megs of music does. The most likely alternative is a "flat" folder-based navigation system, which will pretty much equate directly to resounding market failure, and as stupid as MS makes us believe they are at times, they aren't that stupid!

Oh god no I hope apple doesn't cave to this kind of Orwellian garbage. I feel for all of the victims of DUIs and know that I have personally called the police on a car that was very obviously had an impaired person behind the wheel but as a non drunk driver if I want to avoid being hassled I should be able to.

First of all, DUI checkpoints aren't so frequent that they provide every day hassle to drivers...secondly, they take a very short amount of time to go through (if you havnt been drinking, Cops know). Besides, how is this Orwellian at all? Apple isn't being asked to report users of the application or anything. Sorry man, but if it saves 1 life from drunk driving...it's the right thing to do.

It seems Apple could just wait for Clovertown...

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/02/11/intel_clovertown/

which appears to be 2 Woodcrests on one processor. Could we see 8-Core Mac Pros' in 2007?

    arn

Oh, Kentsfield will as Conroe maybe not support duel processors, thereby disabling the opportunity of 8 cores? I c...;)

Those are two different arguments of the same coin and one can infer a lot by the attitude of what is said.
The point is that MisterMe said nothing that your response would have fit. You can infer all you want, but it's very clear that MisterMe was talking about the market share myth, and was not inferring that Macs are immune to malware.

back here in the UK Hoover were able to trade mark Hoover as their name despite the fact that hoover is the generic term for a vacuum cleaner!

Well, we ask for a "Kleenex", not a tissue.

We drink a "Coke", not a soda.

We use a "Band-Aid", not an adhesive bandage.

We like to "Roller Blade", not inline skate.

Although we don't "Hoover" here in the United States, I think "Hoover" falls into the "Coke, Kleenex, Band-aid, etc." catagory in England.

I swear, this guy never seems happy about anything. I seem to recall him saying this for other product releases... $10 says he'll say it again once the MBA is released.

If everybody puts him on IGNORE we would be done.

You would not have said "What on earth is an app store?". You would have said "Where is it?" because you would have known it is a place that sells apps/applications. Why? Because it is descriptive. And that is the point of the argument.

It looks descriptive to you because there is an App Store for your Mac and there is an App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. If Apple hadn't invented the term "App Store" and used it for its super successful site, you would never have heard the term, and you wouldn't know what it means.

Applications are a type of program. They have been called so since the dawn of time.

When you take some facial cream and put it on your face, that is called "application". When you take some abstract idea and turn it into practice, that is called "application". When you fill out a form to get a passport, that is called "application". "application" is a word with many meanings.

I can't wait to get my hands on an iPhone- I'm getting tired of my SLVR. As soon as the iPhone launches I'm throwing my SLVR in to a river. This is starting to become tradition, there must be a half dozen old cell phones of mine which have been cast in to the briny deep. What a liberating experience.

Dude! The Sierra Club would appreciate if you donated the phones to them instead! :D

It's not a huge redesign, they'll just need a motherboard of the same form factor with a different socket.

Yeah mother boards are easy to make =P

I wouldnt worry about kernal panics or incompatibility issues with thunderbolt. Its like any other peripherals, its been heavily tested by apple and as long as other devices meets the requirements for thunderbolt, there will be no issues.

I *would* worry, for the following reasons:

So who said OS X is completely secure? Go back and read the statements that have been made.

That's just a straw man argument concocted to give some posters here an excuse to be argumentative, nothing more.

certainly not if you own the content. cds don't have ads, but radio does.

People who drive slowly in the passing lane are inconsiderate.

People who swerve in front of minivans carrying babies are dangerous.

    Aren't you 16?
